Hello Barbie and Hello Dreamhouse Privacy FAQ
Last Revised: September 22, 2016
Why do we ask parents to provide their email address and create a parent account?
What other personal information does ToyTalk collect from children under 13?
In addition to parental email, Hello Barbie™ and/or Hello Dreamhouse™ interact with users using speech, and audio recordings of such interactions may be captured when Hello Barbie or Hello Dreamhouse are used. These audio recordings may be considered personal information under the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act ("COPPA"). In addition to the recordings themselves, it is possible for children to provide personal information when they talk with Hello Barbie or Hello Dreamhouse, and such information may be captured in these recordings. However, it is our policy to delete such personal information where we become aware of it, and we contractually require our service providers to do the same.
What other information may be captured when my child talks to Hello Barbie™ or Hello Dreamhouse™?
Hello Barbie™ and Hello Dreamhouse™ are able to remember certain things that were talked about with users in the past, and responses may be tailored based on the user's play history with Hello Barbie™ or Hello Dreamhouse™. For example, Hello Barbie may remember that the user's favorite color is blue and remember what games have been played in order to suggest new games and topics to try to keep the conversation fresh and exciting. This information is used to improve the play experience and is not used to advertise to or contact the child.
Why is parental consent required?
Parental consent is required because the use of Hello Barbie™ and Hello Dreamhouse™ may include the capture and use (as described below) of audio recordings containing the voice of a child under the age of 13, and these audio recordings are considered personal information under COPPA.
How are recordings used by ToyTalk?
We use audio recordings to create the entertainment experience in Hello Barbie™ and Hello Dreamhouse™. This includes enabling speech recognition (so we can provide meaningful responses to what you and your children say) and archiving play sessions of children for their parents to access. These recordings may also be used for research and development purposes, such as to maintain and analyze the functioning of our products, to improve speech recognition technology and artificial intelligence algorithms, and to create better entertainment experiences. We do not use the recordings or their content to contact children or to advertise to them.
How does ToyTalk share recordings with third parties?
We share audio recordings with third party vendors who assist us with speech recognition, with developing, testing and improving our products, speech recognition technology and artificial intelligence algorithms, and with conducting research and development. These vendors do not have access to account information and have agreed to not use these audio recordings for other purposes. Vendors may be permitted to use transcriptions of recordings and feature extracted data that are derived from the recordings, but that do not contain any audio files of real voices, for research and development purposes.
We will not share any audio recordings with Mattel. However, we may share certain transcripts of recordings with Mattel, which will be used solely for the purpose of enabling Mattel to assist us in improving the scripting of Hello Barbie™ and Hello Dreamhouse™.
Parents may share recordings created through their account via email or on third-party sites such as Facebook, YouTube and Twitter through their parent accounts. Such sharing is not automatic. It must be initiated by the parent user.
What controls do parents have over account information and content?
Parents have the right to review or have deleted any personal information collected from their child that is retained by ToyTalk. Parents may also review and delete any audio files in their account and may also permanently delete their accounts via the ToyTalk's website.
Can other users contact my child or access their information through ToyTalk?
For safety purposes, ToyTalk products are designed so that there is no ability for users to contact each other via ToyTalk and so that a ToyTalk account holder cannot access information in anyone else's account.
